2820 Press provides content strategy, business consulting, and media production services to clients in the technology, communications, and professional services fields. We’re based in Philadelphia, yet our client roster includes companies throughout the United States.
The picture you’re looking at near the top of this page is the front door of the Abbeyglen Castle, overlooking an Irish village named Clifden. Some of the rooms there date back to 1832. And it’s in one of those rooms where Lori and I decided to launch our company.
For the previous six years, I worked for Apple, in a role where I coached business owners on how they could use technology to make their teams more productive. During that same period (and for a few years before), I managed a side hustle as a freelance copywriter specializing in sales letters, blog posts, and press releases.
Like many of my peers, Steve Jobs’ passing got me thinking about my role in the company and the dent I wanted to make in the universe. Having already produced a popular syndicated radio series, written books about finding success as an artist, and launched (and exited) my own technology startup, I felt like I craved the ability to get more hands-on with clients who wanted their companies to thrive. Lori, with her background in optical sales and fashion, wanted our firm to focus on clients who felt a real passion for their clients and customers.
So, in our room at the Abbeyglen, we started sketching out the principles that would end up becoming our D2C Manifesto: the document that describes both the kinds of clients we serve and the value we can add for them based on our passion, our skills, and our experience.
We also dreamed up our company’s name, based on our desire to launch a company that would be stable from inception. We haven’t taken outside investment, and we’ve bootstrapped every stage of our growth. A colleague of mine, fascinated with chemistry, had told me about the “magic numbers” that identify the most stable nuclei. 2, 8, 20, and 28 all describe powerful, stable atomic structures. We adopted “two eight twenty” as the name of our company, but “twenty-eight twenty” works just as well. (It also tells us whether you’ve read this story or not.)
Today, we’ve grown beyond just the two of us, staffing a team of subject matter experts that includes both our in-house employees and our extended cohort of freelance specialists with skills tuned to solve client problems efficiently. In our first few years, we’ve worked with founders who have inspired us, with teams that have exceeded everyone’s expectations, and with leaders who push us to deliver more value with every project.
Tomorrow, I hope we’ll get to work with you.
